HOW TO PLAY CRAPS

[ home ]

The game of Craps can be a complicated one to learn. Walk around any casino and you will most likely find the craps table to be the loudest section. There’s nothing like being at a Craps table when the going is good. Many players stay away due to intimidation. However, the basics of the game can be relatively easy to learn. Rather than try to learn all about Craps in minutes, new players should learn a few basics that will allow them to play. Once you have the basics down, you can start to branch out into all the other bets. The player interactivity and choices help make craps one of the best casino table games to play. If you play craps online, you have the luxury of taking your time to bet. In a live game, time is limited.

Preface

Today, we are going to focus on a couple of issues: The come out roll, the pass line, the don’t pass line, pass line odds (and don’t pass odds) and the hardway bets. The goal is to teach you how to start playing right away. The pass line in craps is one of the best bets in the casino. Knowing how to play it will give you a great leg up on winning money in the casino.

The Start

Each “round” of craps begins with a come out roll. This roll is to determine what the “point” is. The point is a number (4,5,6,8,9,10) that must be rolled before a 7 for everyone betting the pass line to win. The come out roll is when you will place your bet on either the pass line or don’t pass line. Here’s the goal of each one.

Pass Line: When you bet the pass line, you are hoping the “shooter” (The person throwing the dice or the computer) rolls the point before rolling a 7. If a 7 is rolled first, you lose.

Don’t Pass Line: This is just the opposite. You want the shooter to roll a 7 first. This means you win. If the point is made, you lose.

On the come out roll, you can win or lose instantly. If you are on the pass line, you will win even-money of the shooter throws a 7 or 11 and you lose if a 2,3 or 12 is rolled.. If you are on the don’t pass line, you will win if the shooter throws a 2 or 3 (12 is a push) and you will lose is a 7 or 11 is rolled.

Odds

Once a point is established, you can take out odds on your bet. For example, if the point was a 4, you could place $10 in odds behind your pass line bet and get a payment of 2-1 if it hits. If you have a don’t pass bet, you would bet $10 to win $5—it’s just the opposite of the pass line. You always want to take your odds if you are betting on the pass line. Don’t pass bettors might want to pass on the odds if the point is a 6 or 8, since those are the two easiest points, mathematically, to hit.

Hardway Bets

In the center of the craps layout is the proposition bet area. There are four hardway bets that can be wagered on—hard 4, hard 6, hard 8 and hard 10. The hard 4 (2 and 2) and hard 10 (5 and 5) pay 8 for 1 and the hard 6 (3 and 3) and hard 8 (4 and 4) pay 10 for 1. These bets stay up until a seven is rolled or the “soft” version of the number is rolled.

You now have some basic knowledge on the game of Craps. Start with making pass line bets and progress from there.
